A STUDY of vertebrates’ genomes has found a new reason for their length. Vertebrates have roughly four times as many genes as invertebrates and most researchers believed that their genome was assembled in two successive duplications of all their genes. But when Andrew Martin of the University of Colorado in Boulder compared the evolution of 35 groups of vertebrate genes, he found that new genes appeared at many different times.
